Brockport Smiles Celebrates Another Success Event

Wed, Feb 12th, 2020

The numbers are in, and Dr. Thaney and the team at Brockport Smiles are happy to report their 5th annual candy buy-back event a big success! During the Halloween season, Brockport Smiles gives parents the opportunity to protect their little one's dental health and support our troops by buying back some of the Halloween candy at $1 per pound. In 2018, we received 282 pounds of candy. However, for the 5th annual event, we partnered with Holy Cross Catholic School and the Tri-county Youth Hockey League and had our best year yet! Dr. Thaney and his team collected a whopping 392 pounds of candy.

Where Did All the Candy Go?

For the past five years, Brockport Smiles has partnered with Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that makes care packages for our servicemen and women with candy donations. Operation Gratitude sends out over 300,000 care packages individually addressed to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen deployed overseas as well as to their children left behind. First Responders, New Recruits, Veterans, Wounded Heroes, and their Care Givers are also provided with care packages. These care packages are well thought out so that our servicemen and women know just how much they mean to us.

Of course, they don't only receive candy. We want our servicemen and women to have their favorite candy as well as have healthy smiles. That's why we also include copious amounts of floss, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. The package generally contains snacks, hygiene products, entertainment, handmade items, as well as personal letters of support from various persons who want to thank the servicemembers for their brave and continuous service.

We are happy to lend our support to such a great cause. The thought of our servicemen and women opening up their care packages and smiling makes us smile.

Taking Care of Our Brockport Community Too

Dr. Thaney was also able to join in on the support for one local family who lost their mother, Carrie Ray, a teacher for the Brockport School District. As a big supporter of the Brockport local schools and the College at Brockport, we are honored to be able to use our Annual Candy Buy Back event to match dollar for dollar of the candy we bought to support this family during their time of need.

Thank You, Brockport for Another Successful Event

We want to say thank you to Holy Cross Catholic School and the Tri-county Youth Hockey League for partnering with us and helping us have another successful Candy Buy Back. We love giving back and being part of a community that supports one another both locally and globally.
