Brockport Dental Practice Protect Young Athlete’s Teeth This Year By Donating Mouth Guards to Hockey Team

Wed, Jan 15th, 2020

Dr. Thaney and the Brockport Smiles Team has once again partnered with Battle Sports Science to provide mouth guards to young athletes. This time, we donated 149 mouth guards to some brilliant hockey players from the tri-county league. The tri-county league is a club hockey organization with players from three counties. The hockey players were a mix of ages, their ages ranged from 5-18 years old. We set up a table at the hockey rink on picture night and handed out the brand new mouth guards to the hockey players. We know our young players are enjoying their custom Battle Brand Athletic guards.

We’re always excited to give back to the community and we find this is an important way to do so.

The Importance of Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are actually increasingly important in contact sports such as hockey. We really wanted to protect our young hockey players. According to the American Dental Association, an athlete is actually 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they aren’t wearing a mouthguard. Mouth guards don’t only protect the teeth, they protect the lips, jaw and the rest of the face and mouth. They can even prevent the severity and likelihood of a concussion!

The American Dental Association also noted that treating a sports-related injury can be costly and so mouth guards are a worthwhile investment. They recommend getting custom mouth guards because they are the safest and most protective option. We at Brockport Smiles only want the very best for our young athletes so we got them custom mouth guards.

In addition to wearing a mouthguard, practicing good oral hygiene such as brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly will also help to protect their smiles.

We look forward to doing this again and we’ll be cheering on our hockey players. If you have a family member who is an athlete and are worried about protecting their face and teeth, give us a call so we can discuss their options.
